Many of us contact contractors to come into our homes and place of business to either fix something, install or build and are not concerned with the liability coverage that they have. For the majority of us our home is one of our biggest assets and yet we don’t spend the time to determine if those contractors have insurance to cover the damage they may do to our home or business. When we look at contractors we don’t usually ask to see a certificate of insurance and then check the liability amount. Take for example you have a painting contractor come into you home or business and he brings in a space heater. That space heater catches fire and the painter puts it out. He leaves later that day to go to lunch and the space heater catches fire and burns down the whole first base side of 5/3rd ball park in Grand Rapids. Do you think that contractor would be better off with liability coverage of $300,000 or $1,000,000. Think if that was your home and what limit you would like your contractor to have. Its pretty simple to ask for a certificate of insurance and should make it part of your conversation with the contractor.
